Over the
past couple of years, Brenda Ross has collected a large number of talking books
with the aim of offering them to Club Members through Helpline. The idea was to
use them for people in hospital who either couldn’t or didn’t wish to read or
watch T.V.; or others who were
temporarily experiencing a loss of sight at home; or those having treatment that needed a rest
or change from other forms of passing the time!
This has worked well and quite a few people have benefited from this
offer, with a tape recorder being provided when required.
This
talking book library has more than 250 titles in it, covering all types of
listening matter, e.g. romance, thrillers, murders, comedy, and many classics
as well as short stories (for short term listening spans!) Now, more and more people are finding these
books enjoyable and of use, particularly during long car journeys and such
like. So it has been decided to make
this a lending library, available to Club Members at a cost of €1.50 per “book” and, maybe, more for a
series involving four or more tapes.
Brenda
has agreed to provide the lists (possibly at Club Coffee mornings or at
Servissim Post Box, following a ‘phone call to her on 836886 preferably between
9.00 – 12.30 on Thursday mornings or, if urgent, about 6.30 p.m. any evening.
Any
money made out of this service will go to Helpline. Also, should anyone have talking books they
have finished with, they would be gratefully received to add to the library.
